英文中Directory和Catalog的区别

有没有英文达人能够详细解释一下，在英语中directory和catalog的差别和适用场合？中文把这两个词都翻译成“目录”，尤其是在谈到LDAP之类的时候，但是很含糊，我想了解他们本来确切的意思。
我是新用户，没有多少积分，只能意思一下，谢谢！
再补充一点，比如说，我们讲一本书的目录，是“table of content”而不说是"catalog"，更细微的区别在哪里？
我知道这问题本身可能含糊不清，但也只能说到这样，主要是侧重语感上的，不是词义本身。谢谢楼下回答的各位朋友。

比如图书馆的书录啦 什么的 都是catalog
a catalog of all the books in the library
图书馆里所有书籍的目录

directory有指南 使用手册 等的意思
并且 电脑里面的文件夹也是这词

TABLE OF CONTENT 一般指的是论文的目录
书的目录也可以用CATALOG的

一般指分类很多的话用CATALOG
并且CATALOG也可以作为动词使用
catalogue the VCD sets 把VCD集分类,或者编成目录

Directory主要由两种意思：
1. an alphabetical list of names and addresses(主要是按字母顺序排列的名字地址本)

2. (computer science) a listing of the files stored in memory (usually on a hard disk)（用于计算机术语，意思是文件在硬盘上的储存表）

Catalog主要由两种意思
1. a book or pamphlet containing an enumeration of things（包括其他事物细目的书或小册子）

2. a complete list of things; usually arranged systematically（系统的统计一系列事物的完整列表）

catalog
1. (图书、商品等的)目录;目录册,目录簿
Look in the catalog and see if the library has that book.
查查目录,看看图书馆有没有那本书。
The store sent us a new catalog of its merchandise.
商店寄给我们一份新的商品目录。
