这个概念是1974年Gary Snyder在他的著作 Turtle Island 中推广的。把北美洲比为“海龟岛”有如下寓意：
美洲并非是为欧洲殖民者所“发现”的新大陆,而是由一群富有、聪明的人们所占有、生活的大岛。这个岛由殖民者和原著民所共有。这个概念对于美洲的认识上给出了一个更好的共存概念
