UC知道求解一个英语用法

一个英语文章，讲的是学生学习外语的事。全局如下：they learn foreign languages in order to be able to benefit from people in other countries have written and said,and in order to make people from other countries understand what they themselves mean.就是这句最后的一个they,一个themselves。为什么用两个啊，这个they是否是指的该句的主语，就是“学生”，那这个"themselves"又是指什么呢？呵呵，问题有点长。感谢各位达人解答。
这个相当于,英语上有个用法,we students,有点像同谓语吧!英语的语法不用太抓牛角尖,我们不要用错就好了,语言这东西很难说,我们对中文的用法不是照样有许多不了解的吗?
没有实际意义就是指他们,不加也可以.
