在翻译英语习语时的翻译标准：和汉语一样，英语是世界上历史悠久、高度发展的语言之一，其习语之多，不胜枚举。从某种意义上说，有些英语习语往往能反映出讲英语民族的文化与习俗。有些英语习语的构成形式和使用的比喻与汉语习语有很大的不同，如何理解和翻译这些习语，对许多中国学生来说是一个很棘手的问题。例如，说一个人性格执拗，英语习语中用骡子或猪做比喻（as stubborn as a mule；pigheaded），而汉语中却用“牛”或“驴”作比喻（“有个牛脾气”，“像头犟驴”）。将He is as stubborn（obstinate）as a mule译成“他犟得像头驴”，虽然字面上与英文原文不符，但却正是该英语所表达的意思，而且表达上也符合汉语的表达习惯。因此，英语习语的翻译标准有两个：一是忠实，二是通顺。 所谓忠实，首先指忠实于英语习语所表达的意思，对其不能进行随意地更改或杜撰；其次指忠实于英语习语的风格和色彩。例如，习语pass away，pass to the other side，be done for，kick the bucket，snuff it表达的意思都是die，但是由于他们分属于不同的文体，译文就必须体现出不同的文体风格和色彩。因此，上述习语应分别译为“逝世”、“去了极乐世界”（或“归天”）、“丢了小命”、“蹬腿儿”（或“玩儿完”）、“吹灯拔蜡”。所谓通顺，是指英语习语的译文必须通顺易懂，符合汉语的表达习惯。例如，英语习语like a cat on hot bricks分明用“猫”和“热砖”做形象比喻，形容一个人心神不定，坐立不安。如果照字面意思将其译成“像热砖上的猫”，中国读者就会读不懂或产生误解。只有将其译成“像热锅上的蚂蚁”或“坐如针毡”才符合中国的文化和汉语的表达习惯，从而才能表达出英语习语的真正意义。类似的英语习语还有很多，如：Every dog has its day.人人皆有得意时，neither fish nor fowl四不像（不三不四），bury one’s head in the sand掩耳盗铃等等。忠实与通顺，有时看来似乎是相互对立的。实际上，它们是对立的统一。忠实于原文不是指字面意义上的忠实，更重要的是指习语内在意义及风格上的忠实。只求字面意义的忠实，译文不符合汉语的表达习惯，中国读者读不懂，那不是真正的忠实。同样，只追求译
