On May 23, the Beijing Olympics torch relay came to Shanghai for an exciting two-day run through the city.
Running in a sea of red
A big crowd gathered early at the Shanghai Museum for a ceremony to start the torch relay. It began with a minute of silence to remember the Sichuan earthquake victims. Then former Olympic swimming gold medallist (前奥运金牌得主), Zhuang Yong (庄泳), became the first torchbearer. She was greeted by a sea of red on the streets, from the red national flags in people’s hands to the red“Love China”logos on their faces and T-shirts.
Go China, go Sichuan
Among the 416 torchbearers were four who had been or would soon go to Sichuan to help in the relief (救援) effort.
Liao Changyong (廖昌永), a famous singer from Sichuan Province, was also a torchbearer. He said that he believed his hometown would regain its beauty.
