The whole Earth is warming up, and this is particularly apparent in the Arctic region, where a continuous acceleration in the rate of glacier melting was resulted. In the past 100 years, the range of temperature increase in the Arctic region was equivalent to twice that of the global average. This trend is expected to continue, and very likely would result in the disappearance of the Arctic glaciers and the extinction of the polar bears. Satellite observations made since 1978 show that the area of Arctic glaciers is diminishing in a rate of 2.7% per year, particularly in summer, when the glacier is diminishing in a rate of 7.4% per year (Image 1.3). Since 1980, the surface temperature of the permafrost zone in the Arctic circle has raised by nearly 3 degrees. Since 1900, the area of seasonal permafrost in the Northern Hemisphere has diminished by 7%, and particularly in spring by 15%.
