译文：唐太宗对房玄龄说：“做人非常需要学习与求问。我过去因为许多凶敌没有平定，东征西讨，亲自参与军事，没有空暇读书。近来，到处安静（没有纷乱），人在殿堂，不能亲自拿着书卷，（就）命令别人读给我听。做国君，做臣子及做父，做子的道理，政令教化的道理，都在书里。古人说：‘不学习，一无所知，处理事情只有烦恼。’不只是说说，回想年轻时的处事行为，很是觉得不对。”
