give one's life to 的用法

to后面到底是用"do"还是"doing"形式？
或是两者都能用，那有什么区别？

可能是这个短语用的比较少吧，语法书上查不到，网上也只能查到一个很模糊的解释http://www.nse.cn/newsdetail.cfm?iCntno=723&popuse=1。
哪位能给解释清楚，还有加分！

do和doing都可以用，但意思不一样：
1. give one's life to do 意思是“为……献出了生命”，give一定是过去时态，
如：He gave his life to save the boy.
2. give one's life to doing 意思是“为……奉献了一生”，give的时态不一定
如: He gave/gives his life to helping the poor.
说明：我也查过这个短语的用法，后来问了两个native speaker，这是他们的解释，供参考。

give one's life to并不是一个常用的固定短语，比较认同heracer的观点。
比如devote的用法
devote oneself to doing献身于....这里的oneself跟one's life差不多的意思
He has devoted his whole life to benefiting mankind.
他把一生都献给了造福人类的事业。
devoted to sth 专心于某事

估计没人能够透彻的说清楚why or why not,就像汉字为什么这么写，不是一句两句说的完的，哈哈

本人认为是doing，give one's life说明之前他（生前）一直致力于做某事。

give one's life to 献身于

1. give one's life to do 意思是“为……献出了生命”，give一定是过去时态，
如：He gave his life to save the boy.
2. give one's life to doing 意思是“为……奉献了一生”，give的时态不一定
如: He gave/gives his life to helping the poor.
