Dogs bury (埋葬) bones. Squirrels store nuts (坚果) to last through the winter. But do pigs save anything? No! Pigs save nothing. They bury nothing. They store nothing.
So why do we save our coins in a piggy bank? Because someone made a mistake.
In the fifteenth century, metal was expensive and seldom used for household wares (器皿). Instead, dishes and pots were made of a cheap kind of orange clay (黏土). It was called pygg. When people could save an extra (额外的) coin, they put it into their pygg jars.
Around the eighteenth century, the word“pygg”began to sound the same as the word“pig”. Over the next 200 to 300 years, people forgot about the clay“pygg”. And the phrase“pygg jar”changed into“pig bank”.
In the nineteenth century when English potters were ordered to make piggy banks, they made jars that looked like a pig! And the“pigs”soon became popular among children.
