only to find表示“结果发现”，相当于and found。
动词不定式表示结果，通常不是人们所期望的结果，往往是不好的结果，前面常常加上only。主句谓语与不定式本身没有因果关系，只是先后发生的两个动词，所以可改为and...又如：
He hurried to the station, only to find the train had left.
He hurried home, only to find his mother was gone.
