In Chorus of Mushrooms by Hiromi Goto, each character builds their identities as Japanese – Canadian by different methods. The story states the three generation of women conflicted by the problem of being a Japanese and a Canadian. Naoe and keiko both have different level of feelings about their unique identity.The granddaughter Murasaki struggles in the position between the two extremes and her identity as a Japanese -Canadian.

Keiko is one of the outstanding characters in the story because she is kind of a person that would do whatever to fit in the society, no matter it is right or wrong. This character makes reader more memorable. For instance, Keiko chooses not to speak Japanese with anyone in order to fit in the Canadian culture. “If you live in Canada, you should live like a Canadian and that’s how I raised my own daughter.”(Goto 189) Furthermore, the writer mention Keiko as a typical Canadian-Japanese which means she’s Canadian inside her mind, but having an Asian l
