A lot of e-mail English words might look unfamiliar to us-many look like rubbish! This is because they come from a computer program called ICQ, which means I seek you. 很多电子邮件所使用的英文看起来都很陌生，很多看起来很垃圾。这是因为他们全部来自于一个叫ICQ的电脑程序。ICQ意思为我在寻找你，它是一种在线的电子邮件系统，你可以用它来同你的朋友进行交流。一个加拿大的老师指出，“人们可以通过电脑来进行交谈，但是你必须能够很快的打出你想表达的内容，不然你的另一个交谈伙伴很可能会对此感到不满。所以选择使用电子邮件专用英文可以很快地表达出你的意思”
电子邮件专用英文分为两种。一种为简写，也就是用一些词组的每个词的第一个字母所组成的。如BTW就是由by the way（顺便），CSL是 can't stop laugh(笑得无法停下来了）。另一种就是使用同音字，它是将字母同数字或者符号相结合，只要使词读起来同原来单词是相同的即可。如，将great ”写成“ gr8 ”或者是将“ see you later ”写成“ CUl8r ”
在写邮件专用文字时，你可以不使用那些传统意义上的标点符号来表达意思。你可以用标点符号来表达你的感觉，这种叫做感觉标点符号。你可以用一些符号来表现你的面部表情，；）这个符号被广泛的理解为笑脸。
邮件专用字是很有趣的，并且在很多时候看起来都想是字谜。你自己就可以很容易地学会，并且将自己的想法表达出来。写这种字来进行沟通不代表不礼貌，只是你需要在合适的时间里使用。当你和朋友写邮件的时候，或者你和朋友发短信的时候，你都可以使用它们。但是请记住，不要在课堂上使用它们，你的老师可能不会喜欢看到你的考试卷子中出现这些电子邮件专用字词。
