汽车工业是最早运用CAD技术的行业之一。目前，CAD技术在汽车工业的应用已经相当普遍，成为国内外汽车工业开发新产品、组织规模生产、加强市场竞争的重要手段。特别是在缩短产品开发周期，提高产品性能、质量、可靠性和降低成本等方面，CAD起着重要的作用。但是,随着计算机软件及硬件的不断发展,在一些设计上,CAD已经渐渐落后，取代其的将是更多的三维设计软件及可参数化软件。
PRO/E作为三维实体设计软件中功能最强大软件之一。它不仅仅是直接在计算机建构三维实体模型，而且利用设计的模型进行装配模拟和机构分析、动态干涉检查、动力学分析、有限元应力分析、铸造、模具及美化处理等特点。
我国汽车产品设计距国际水平还有相当的差距，尤其是在驱动桥产品的设计和研究方面差距更大一些。驱动桥位于动力传动系的末端，其基本功能是增大由传动轴或变速器传来的转矩，并将动力合理地分配给左、右车轮；另外，驱动桥还要承受作用于路面和车架或车厢的铅垂力、纵向力合横向力。因此，驱动桥作为汽车上重要的总称之一，应尽快改进其设计的方法、步骤，以提高我国汽车产品设计的总体水平。
本文根据上述所叙，从PRO/E三维设计的可参数化等特点出发，对驱动桥的半轴及后桥壳体进行三维实体的建模设计。设计中，综合考虑了驱动桥的结构形式及已知参数，通过反复对半轴及驱动桥桥壳的受力分析和强度的计算、校核及修改，基本达到了设计的要求。
