数字电视是将模拟电视信号转换成数字信号，然后进行各种功能的处理、传输、记录和控制的系统。
数字机顶盒是以计算机技术、网络技术、多媒体技术为基础的信息设备，它接收数字电视信号，并且将其转换为模拟电视能够显示的信号。它是数字电视的过度性产品。
本文以数字电视机顶盒开发项目为基础，研究了数字电视系统所涉及到的相关理论和关键技术，包括数字电视系统工作原理、MPEG-2标准介绍、DVB标准介绍和国内外的发展等。
本文同时参考国内外众多的机顶盒产品，提出了机顶盒软硬件结构的设计方案，还介绍了所开发的机顶盒的软硬件总体结构，软件开发环境和调试方法。并详细讨论了在SC2000平台上使用PSOS实时操作系统实现EPG-电视节目指南功能的方法和过程。
