有人评论说，国内动画最缺乏的就是“表演”的成分。虽有些作品有一定的表演成分，但总是给人较呆板、不太自然的感觉。对动画表演艺术这个问题，目前国内很多动画人还存在许多误解，多是按照一般影视表演艺术的形式进行创作。虽然动画表演艺术拥有影视表演艺术的一些特性，但是他亦有着与一般影视表演艺术所不同的动画所特有的属性和特点。
本文就是从动画专业的角度出发研究表演艺术，采用定性、功能分析与个案研究的方法，将获得的各种动画与一般影视表演艺术的材料进行思维加工，对动画表演艺术进行“质”的方面的分析。并运用归纳与演绎、分析与综合的办法研究动画表演艺术中的一些特定属性特征，弄清其在动画艺术中的重要作用、艺术特点及功能。通过对影视和动画表演概念、动画表演的高度假定性、动画表演的属性特点、虚拟演员如何体现其角色以及动画表演艺术的意境等方面进行分析论证，并结合对优秀动画作品的对比解析，讨论在动画艺术这个特殊环境下的表演学理论特有的表现方式，找出动画表演艺术与普通影视表演艺术之间的关联和区别。
动画表演艺术之所以能够成为相对于一般影视表演艺术而独立存在的艺术表现形式，其独立性主要表现在这样几个方面：
总而言之，目的在于力求有助于清晰国内动画人对动画表演艺术本身的认识，把握好动画艺术与普通影视艺术之间的关联和界限；强化动画表演意识并能够在动画表演艺术上发展和提高，将动画表演从简单的叙事转变成为一门能唤起观众心理共鸣的艺术；增强动画作品的可观看性和观众的情感投入程度，提高动画影片票房以及周边产品销量。
