The importance of the textile and clothing sector for the Chinese domestic economy is illustrated in Table 11.8. The data show that textiles account for two-thirds of the value-added from the sector, and that the sector as a whole provided 10 per cent of total national value-added in the early 1990s, but that this share had fallen to 7.3 per cent by the year 2000. Most of this decrease was due to relatively stagnant production of textiles, as value-added in clothing had almost doubled over the seven-year period from 1993 and had maintained a relatively constant share structure of the sector. As the data in the Table demonstrate, over one-third of the value-added in textile production is provided by state-owned and state-holding enterprises. In contrast, well over 90 per cent of clothing production emerges from the non-state-owned business.
