在热带海洋中，触目皆是一块块巨大的珊瑚礁石或珊瑚构成的岛屿。这些礁石和岛屿往往被人们误认为是岩石所成，实际上它们是由从古至今的珊瑚虫建造的。珊瑚虫是一种海洋腔肠动物，身体呈圆筒形，辐射对称，上端有口，口周围有几条触手，下端有基盘，起固定作用，体壁有内外胚层够呈。外胚层能分泌石灰质或角质的骨骼，这就是通常所说的珊瑚。
珊瑚虫生长和繁殖都很快，群体不断出芽。当珊瑚虫死亡后，它们的子孙即在起祖先的“遗骨”上一代一代地繁殖下去，年深日久，日积月累，珊瑚虫群体逐渐在海岛四周或海边堆积，形成一块块说大的礁石或一座座岛屿。世界上最大的珊瑚岛是澳大利亚东北部部名的大保礁，它宽约56千米，长达2040千米，是澳大利亚大陆的天然屏障。此外，太平洋的马绍尔群岛，中国南海的西沙群岛、南沙群岛都是由造珊瑚礁的骨骼堆积形成的岛屿。凡是能造礁的珊瑚，称为造礁珊瑚；不能造礁的珊瑚称为非礁珊瑚。在珊瑚礁的周围，由许多藻类和海洋动物，它们够成珊瑚礁生物群落。这些藻类在珊瑚虫制造骨骼时，会排放二氧化碳来制造养分，同时释放出大量的氧，而珊瑚虫会吸收这些氧。所以珊瑚礁就像热带雨林一般，能制造生物生存所所需要的氧，被称为“海洋的热带雨林”。
珊瑚对人类有许多益处。珊瑚岛可供人类居住；其礁石烧成石灰，可用于建筑。古珊瑚礁和现代珊瑚礁可以形成储油层，对开采石油有重要意义。目前已发现和开采的礁型大油田即有十多个，可采储量达50亿吨。软珊瑚、柳珊瑚等是非常好的药材。珊瑚有黄、白、红和蓝色，其形状千姿百态，是天然装饰品等。但由珊瑚礁形成的暗礁，也常会给航行中的舰船带来沉船之灾。
