Theory of mind—the ability to attribute independent mental
states to self and others to predict and explain behavior—has
become a major research focus in developmental psychology
over the last decade (e.g., Astington, Harris, & Olson, 1988;
Fodor, 1992; Leslie, 1987). The litmus test for this ability has
been the attribution of false belief's, which most children achieve
in their 4th year (Wimmer & Perner, 1983). Before this time,
the young child shows a number of socially insightful behaviors
(e.g., mental state talk, naturalistic deception, teasing, understanding
of desires; for a review, see Wellman, 1990), which
may or may not reflect an ability to represent mental states
(Perner, 1991). Th
