Lincoln, the son of a poor family, was born in Kentucky. As a child, he used to work hard and help his father on the small farm where they lived. His mother died early. Happily for him his father’s second wife was kind to him. When she saw the boy liked reading, she tried her best to help him. But his family was so poor that the boy could not get many books. He spent very little time at school, perhaps no more than a year in all.
As a young man he worked in a store and later in a post office. He studied law (法律) in his spare time and became a lawyer. Lincoln was very interested in politics (政治), and he was against slavery (奴隶制). In all his political life, he worked hard to build a free state for all the people. He became president (总统) of the United States.
