Sanjay, each year in the United States, there are about 4,000 drownings. These deaths can occur in public pools like this, home pools, on lakes. To help talk to us about how to stay safe around water, we’re joined by the American Red Cross’s Sean Penn. This is the Sean Penn who saves lives.

First of all, Sean, how can you tell if somebody’s in danger in the water?
PENN
You’re going to recognize a victim that’s not making any forward progress. They may be flailing1 their arms, but they’re not moving forward in the water. Or they may just quietly slip2 below the surface, or be floating on the surface face down and not moving. One of those three things is a good sign that they may be in trouble.
