When you wanted make a call,the image of a keypad could be projected on to the pile of papers beside you and you wold move your finger over the numbers as you do with a real telephone.

请问以上段落前后都是一般现在是，为什么此段用了过去时？WOULD 在这里又是何解？

这里用的是虚拟语气。
没有上下文，单凭本段来看，好像这一段有点像是模拟一种电话操作，“当你。。。”，其实，你并没有这样。你看最后那句的“as you DO with a real telephone.”中的do恢复了一般现在时。
