初三英语课本的疑问

书上有一句 What would you do if you wanted to be friends with a new student？ 我们老师说friends不能用单数a friend . 谁能详细说明下？
那如果Lily is a friend with lucy 的friend应该也改为friends吗？

be friends with sb. （和……交朋友）是一个固定的短语，与之类似的还有make friends with sb.（和……交朋友），不能把s丢了，如果说我想跟他交朋友，也得说 I want to make friends with him.

Lily is a friend of Lucy. 不用with

整句话的意思是：
如果你想跟一名新同学交朋友 那么你会怎么做呢？
这里 friends 是包括了 你（你们）和那名新同学 也就是两个人或两个人以上 因此要用复数形式
