求英文高手翻译考研题，已有答案，但求给我分析我这段话的结构。。谢啦！

1. 主句是 the assertion was scarcely contested.(这个论断几乎是无可置疑的)
从句是 unless it was able to determine freely its political status and to ensure freely its economic, social and cultural development，it was difficult for people to enjoy its basic rights.
虽然很长，但还是unless...it was difficult to...的句型：“如果不...，...就很难”整句话就是主句中的“assertion”。
从句翻译过来就是“如果一个民族不能自由地决定其政治地位，不能自由地保证其经济、社会和文化的发展，要享受其基本权利，是不容易的”
if not impossible是插入语，和上下文联系起来看意思是“如果不是不可能，最少是很难的”翻译的时候先别管他。

2. 把两个从句用A和B替换掉，主句就很简单：“there is no agreement whether A or B.”：“是A还是B，现在还没有取得一致意见。”
再看从句：
A：“methodolgy refers to the concepts peculiar to historical work in general”
“方法论是一般性历史工作中所指的特殊概念”
B：“to the research techniques appropriate to the various branches of historical inquiry.”
看起来很长，其实主干就是“techniques appropriate to various branches”
翻译一下：“历史研究中适合各个分支的研究方法”
最后把A和B组装会主句就好了~

长难句吗
