水禽衔鱼图案早在新石器时代就出现过，汉代这类形象很多，直到北魏仍能见到。汉代还有凤鸟、辟邪及飞仙衔鱼图案。据学者们考证，禽鸟衔鱼是有其特殊含义的。汉代尤其流行这类象征型图案，那时认为鸿雁是瑞禽，多用于婚嫁、聘问之礼；古人游戏时，以获鱼表示胜利，鱼余同音，鱼又表示富裕。雁鱼灯的出现说明人们追求富足、向往胜利，有此吉祥寓意自然受到人们的喜爱。
朔县照十八庄出土的这件雁鱼灯是最精彩的一件。其取材于这种祥瑞题材，又在铜制灯体上遍施黑、白、红、绿彩色纹饰，令人观之心动。此器灯盘、灯罩可转动开合，便于挡风和调节光照度、光照方向。鱼身、雁颈和雁体中空相通，便于吸纳烟尘，各部分可拆卸，便于清洗。构思设计的合理，实用功能和形式的完美结合使其成为一件公认的艺术珍品。这件工艺考究、造型生动的彩绘青铜雁鱼灯，它不仅能调节灯光射向，重要的是将烟尘吸入雁的肚里让水溶解，好净化空气，并能拆卸清洗。这盏科学实用的灯，说明中国古代人就有环境保护意识。
