Origin of coffee
The most famous of the stories about the origin of coffee involves an Abyssinian (
阿比西尼亚人) goatherd named Kaldi who one day noticed that his normally docile(驯良的, 温顺的) goats had suddenly become exceptionally(异常地) lively. On closer investigation(研究) Kaldi discovered his goats were nibbling(啃) the bright red berries from a shiny, dark-leafed shrub(灌木) nearby.
Bravely the goatherd tasted these berries himself and soon found, to his amazement that he felt extraordinarily stimulated and invigorated(鼓舞). Convinced(深信) that he had discovered a miracle, Kaldi picked some more of the berries and rushed off with them to show his local Imam(阿訇), a learned holy man. The Imam, on hearing the story, pronounced(断言) the beans to be evil and flung(扔) them onto the fire, whereupon a delicious and exotic aroma(芬芳) soon filled the air.
