When writers make similar false assumptions about the extent to which readers are likely to share their knowledge, beliefs, etc, readers may be conscious of having to struggle to understand, and sometimes they may fail. In fact, the widely different backgrounds make more obvious a fact that we sometimes forger: that we can never understand one another completely. Except in the most severely scientific writing, this seems inevitable, because all of us- however much we have in common – have different experiences which make us see things differently. But of course one reason for reading is that we want to understand other people’s ideas; if we were all identical there would be no point in most communication. Fortunately, for most purposes, the understanding need not be complete; but the fact that we cannot get inside the writer’s mind is no excuse for not doing our best to understand what she wants to say.
