We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car was full of flowers inside! On the way home we had to stop at the traffic lights , and there my wife saw the bookshelf.

It stood outside a furniture shop. "Buy it ,"she said at once." We'll carry it home on the roof-rack(车顶架). I've always wanted one like that."

What could I do? Ten minutes later I was twenty dollars poorer, and the bookshelf was tied on the roof-rack. It was tall and narrow, quite heavy too.

As it was getting darker, I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed more polite than usual that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.

After a time my wife said," There's a long line of cars behind. Why don't they overtake?"

我该怎么办呢？二十分钟后我只剩二十美元了。我们把书架系在车顶架上。书架很高很窄，也相当的重。
天黑以后，我开慢了车。那晚其它的司机看起来好象比平常更有礼貌，警察甚至停了交通灯让我们通行。携带家具是一个好主意。
过了一会我妻子说，后面有一长条的车，为什么他们不赶上来呢？
正在那时一辆警车赶上来了，当他们开过的时候车里的两名警官很严肃的看着我们。但是他们还是带着微笑让我们跟在他们后面穿过忙碌的交通。那辆警车在村子的教堂边停下来，其中一位警官向我走来并说到：
“嗯，先生，你需要帮忙吗？”
我不大明白地说“谢谢警官，你们非常热心，我就住在下边的街道。”
他看着我们车上的东西：先是看花，接着看书架，笑着说“嗯，嗯”。我说“只是一台书架，但是还是再次感谢。”我尽可能快地开车回家了。
