在温度高的海域内，正好碰上了大气里发生一些扰动，大量空气开始往上升，使地面气压降低，这时上升海域的外围空气就源源不绝地流入上升区，又因地球自转产生的地向偏转力，使流入的空气像车轮那样旋转起来。当上升空气膨胀变冷，其中的水汽冷却凝成水滴时，要放出热量，这又助长了低层空气不断上升，使地面气压下降得更低，空气旋转得更加猛烈，这就形成了台风。
台风形成的条件主要有两个：一是比较高的海洋温度；二是充沛的水汽。
