一个宾语从句的题

He's bought a cottage in the country for _when___he retires,with the money he's saved over half of his life.
这里面 主语He，谓语bought，宾语a cottage 。而为什么when做介词的宾语呢？

宾语 a cottage 是（for the time when he retires）为了以后退休后住的，这个宾语从句是解释cottage 的用处，我们知道宾语从句使用作补充说明宾语的，而retire是一个动词，表示退休这个状态的，整个句子表达的是他用了半辈子存下来的钱在乡村买了一个别墅为了他退休时住的。

有省略的成分
he's bought a cottage in the country for (living there) when he retires
