首先，表现在家庭成员之间，这种观念就有所不同。长幼有序，上下亲疏等关系在中国家庭中体现得极为 严格。在封建家庭中，儿子、儿媳、女儿、女婿等晚辈要对父母、公婆等长辈晨昏磕首，以示孝心。在大家庭 中，长子的地位一向是不可动摇的。他被称为“大少爷”，他是财产的继承者，也是父辈头衔的沿袭者。他可 以代替父亲，行使一家之长的权利，连他母亲也须对他唯唯是从。而他的妻子，在家庭中的地位往往是较低的 ，只有她成为婆婆以后，才能受到其他家庭成员的尊重。这说明中国封建家庭中对妇女的歧视。至于其他家庭 成员，都必须按照长幼顺序来称呼，例如：三哥、二妹、四弟、五妹等。
而在英、美家庭中兄弟姐妹间的称呼不管谁大谁小，总习惯称名，或用小名，兄弟统称“brother”，姐妹 则用“sister”。 长幼间的称呼非常简单。
中间那些称呼可以翻译简单点，适当可以省略。
