IBM has many different organizations that have responsibility for delivering storage solutions. Some of these organizations deal with specific server platforms while others are market specific. Consequently, the overall storage strategy of IBM must take into account independent initiatives and offerings as well as the overall company directions. Being an extremely large company, IBM has coverage in many different market segments with a multitude of products. This storage strategy analysis will be primarily focused on the main storage offerings from IBM. IBM has Storage Systems Group, which is a major force for IBM in delivering enterprise storage systems.

IBM has expressed a vision of providing what is termed autonomic storage. Autonomic storage is defined as self-optimizing, self-configuring, self-protecting and self-healing. The vision includes having IBM’s suite of storage products add the ability to meet the autonomic storage capabilities over time.
