Layne and Shauna Johnson's achievements—individually and collectively—are all the more powerful and poignant when you consider that both have Down's syndrome. Down's syndrome is a condition caused by a genetic malfunction. The condition causes individuals to share an uncanny resemblance to one another and a ceiling on intellectual potential. It also causes IQ to peak at around seventy-five, severely limiting capability and ability-- or so doctors thought. When Layne was born, physicians recommended that his parents place him in an institution (the majority of which did little more than offer physical caretaking). The doctors' advice was, "Get on with your lives and forget that this child was ever born." Instead, his parents made the most of their lives, which included parenting Layne, expecting him to master the world in which he lived and helping him to achieve that mastery. Shauna's parents obviously did likewise.
