Investors Head for the Door After Vimicro Issues 1st-Quarter Estimates

NEW YORK (AP) -- Chinese chip maker Vimicro International Corp. shares got slashed in morning trading after the company said Wednesday that first-quarter earnings could miss Wall Street estimates.

Vimicro expects first-quarter earnings of a penny to 3 cents per American Depositary Share, while analysts on average estimate earnings at 6 cents per share. Revenue is expected to range from $21 million to $23 million, well below the consensus estimate for $33.4 million.

The company said guidance reflects a slow first-quarter due to the Chinese New Year holiday.

For the fourth quarter, the company backed previous guidance for earnings, excluding certain expenses, of 8 cents to 10 cents
