the reason why 和 the reason that/which 如果没弄清，很容易混乱，要联系句子意思。
the reason why ...意为 什么的原因，我为了图省事，把why...当成是reason的同位语，但实际上不是这样。
the reason that/which 后跟修饰reason的定语从句，比如the reason he gave us 意为 他给我们的理由。
这样看来，why和that/which都引导了reason的定语从句，就只好从句意上分析了。如果表示的是“做什么事的原因”之类，就用why；如果是“他给的原因”之类，就用that/which。

换个句子也许会好理解 比如
