The term “Hallyu”, the Korean language for the “Korean Wave”, was coined by Chinese media in 2001 responding to a rise in popularity of Korean pop culture. In fact, the origin of the “Korean Wave” dates back to 1997, when “A Wish upon a Star”, a story of a poor woman courted by two wealthy men, was broadcast by Phoenix TV in Hong Kong and its popularity extended into Chinese Mainland, Taiwan and Southeast Asia.

However, cultural export is no easy thing. As early as in 1980s, a Hong Kong fever sizzled and fizzled in Korea, as action movie stars like Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau appeared in Korean commercials for only a year or two. In 1990s, when Korea began exporting TV dramas to other Asian countries, those programs had a hard time cracking the market, as Japanese ones was all the rage. The big break came in mid-1990s, when Hong Kong and Taiwan began offering multi-channel broadcasting.
