电子商务的发展是站在以往电话、电影、电视、广播、传真等的基础上进行的，其革命性更彻底，影响也更深远。

笔者认为，电子商务的革命性意义主要有三：第一，它是一个巨大的新产业。这个新产业会替代一些过时的旧产业，会压迫一些产业进行重组，会成为(或已经成为)经济的一个重要增长点。第二，它是一场交易方式的革命。它的廉价、高效的交易方式将促成企业内部与外部围绕交易方式的企业管理革命，并将产生适合于电子商务时代的企业管理模式、企业组织模式。第三，电于商务造就的与传统产品不同的新产品、新空间、新理念，如网上电话、电影、电视、音乐、书籍，将对人们的生产、生活产生深远影响。事实上，只有电子商务的大发展才真正预示着人类信息时代的来临。
电子商务目前面临一些严重问题，如安全问题、技术不成熟问题。但是，这些问题一方面是阻碍电子商务发展的障碍，另一方面又是其充满挑战与机会之所在。从本质上看，这些问题丝毫不会减小电子商务的魅力，更不会降低其革命意义。
