在1852年到1856年间，沙皇俄国与土耳其之间发生在克里米亚的战争十分残酷，双方伤亡惨重，大量的伤病员无人照顾。当时。英国有一位具有医学专业知识的女士名叫佛洛伦斯·南丁格尔，她自愿组织战地救护队，率领38名女救护队员负责伤病员的护理，在她的领导下，建立了医院管理制度，提高了护理质量，使伤病员死亡率迅速下降。1860年，她又在英国的圣多马医院办起世界上第一所护士学校，为推动世界各国护理工作和发展护士教育，作出了巨大的贡献。为了纪念这位近代护理学家护士教育的创始人，弘扬南丁格尔对病患如同"老人的儿女，同志的手足，孩子的妈妈"的献身精神，国际上把她的生日--5月12日定为国际护士节。
