交通信号灯控制方式很多，本设计的交通灯控制系统以MCS-51单片机为主控器，作适当的存储器、键盘/显示器、模拟指示灯的扩展，形成机械手动作模拟控制系统。本设计利用LED灯模拟十字路口的交通信号灯，利用接口仪上已有的单脉冲发生器，单脉冲发生器产生的负脉冲来产生外部中断，进行模拟急救车通过。
本交通灯控制系统用到的延时程序是采用定时器的方法，充分利用了单片机的硬件资源，提高了执行效率。本系统所采用的程序由汇编语言编制，其目标程序占用内存空间少，运行速度快，有着高级语言不可替代的用途。本系统使用方便，可控制性强。在现今这个经济发展迅速、人口越来越多的社会，对缓解交通拥挤带来的一系列问题能起到一定的控制作用。
