<<桃花源记并诗>>的主体本是诗, “记”是诗的一个序言,但因为这个“记”有着生动的故事,似有实无的神秘和完美的表达形式,所以它不但可以独立成篇,而且比诗流传更为广泛,在文学史上,也占有一席之地,散发着长久的艺术魅力,而构成这一魅力的原因,就在于文章所体现的艺术特色:从语言风格上看,朴素中见绮丽,自然中见精到,平淡中见韵律；从写作手法上看，相象奇特，虚景实写，实中有虚，情节曲折，悬念迭起。
另外，《桃花源记》是东晋腐朽门阀制度下的反抗宣言，寄托了陶渊明追求自由平等和没有剥削压迫的政治理想。他为后人描绘了一条通向理想境界的道路，一座舒适安稳的住所，一种怡然自乐的生活，一种淳朴友好的社会风俗，一个没有王权的社会，一个在理想中存在，在现实中难寻的世外桃源。桃花源是对所有黑暗社会的反衬，而陶渊明的诗歌艺术就是以避的形态进入精神信仰的理想社会中，创造了高远拔俗的艺术境界。
