Morton Hunter, 1825-1896
*HUNTER, MORTON CRAIG was born February 5, 1825, at Versailles, Indiana. The Hunters were of Irish descent and had fought in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Young Morton Hunter struggled through childhood but entered the State University at Bloomington, graduating from the Law Department in 1849. He immediately started a law practice in Bloomington and was elected to the Indiana State Legislature in 1858. In the summer of 1862 he organized the 82nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment and was appointed the colonel. The regiment was sent to a training area south of Louisville, Kentucky, which the men quickly named Camp Grasshopper. Later, Hunter and the 82nd took part in the Kentucky Campaign of the fall 1862, and they were at Stones River, Tennessee, on New Year'
