薄冰高中英语语法中有一例句：
He wanted to know what was the matter over there.
为何不说
He wanted to know what the matter was over there.
或
He wanted to know what the matter over there was.

中 what 作宾语呢？

what was the matter 虽说看上去是一个问句.但是它这个句型是固定的.不能把它打乱顺序的.这是我们英语老师说的.外国人习惯用这样的表达方式.
同样还有what's wrong
was换成is也是这样的顺序,不过大多用was的.
语言点：宾语从句用陈述语气 ，这句话
WHAT主语
was 谓语
the matter 宾语 按照主谓宾的顺序
所以是He wanted to know what was the matter over there.
PS：两个句子不同，原句应为 the man said what.所以是宾语
What is the matter?句中what 是主语，所以在宾语从句中不要改变语序，这已经是陈述句的语序了
首先要分析句子结构。
主语he，谓语wanted，宾语是一个由what引导的宾语从句。
1.what was the matter 作从句时,语序是不用改变的,这是特例,所以只能这样
2.He wanted to know what the man said.这句从句中主语是the man ,谓语是said,宾语自然是what.把这句从句拿出来就是the man said what所以是宾语
