首先，文章就研究型大学本科生科研素质的相关概念进行了概述，并对研究型大学职能定位与本科生科研素质培养问题进行了讨论。对于概念的界定主要是在综合前人研究的基础上，笔者把科研素质归结为科研知识、科研意识、科研方法和科研精神四个方面。在职能定位与本科生科研素质培养问题讨论部分，回顾了大学科研职能发展历程，结合当前发展分析了我国研究型大学职能定位，最后讨论了本科生科研素质与研究型大学的相互作用。
其次， 本文综合采用定量研究和定性研究的方法对研究型大学本科生科研素质现状进行了研究。采用问卷调查的方法对江苏省某研究型大学400名大四学生从科研知识与方法、科研意识与精神、科研能力三个维度进行了定量研究，从学生的角度分析科研素质现状；采用访谈的方法对该研究型大学20名教师和相关教务管理进行了定性研究，从教师的角度分析科研素质现状。最后把定量研究与定性研究相结合，分析研究当前研究型大学本科生科研素质的现状，存在的问题。
最后，在前面理论研究和实证研究的基础上，对我国研究型大学本科生科研素质培养提出建议。笔者认为构建我国研究型大学本科生科研素质培养体系至少应该遵循系统性原则、科学性原则、全员参与原则和“零缺陷管理”原则。并且对培养体系建设从以下方面提出了以下建议：设专门本科生管理机构、充分发挥教师在本科生科研中的作用、本科生科研项目与科研学分和重新审视本科生培养目标。最后，对研究型大学本科生科研素质培养的发展趋势做了预测。
