背景：哈姆雷特在父亲突然死亡、叔叔继位娶嫂的情况下，一个深夜见到父亲冤死的鬼魂，让他复仇。哈姆雷特一面怀疑父亲的死，愤慨于叔叔和母亲的行为，一面却怕鬼魂是个陷井。他半信半疑，因此精神恍惚，而为了逃避叔叔的试探和迫害，他决定装疯。在这样的折磨里，他说出了上面的话。
