张衡，字平子，章帝建初三年(公元78年)，诞生于南阳郡西鄂县石桥镇一个破落的官僚家庭(今河南省南阳市城北五十里石桥镇)。祖父张堪是地方官吏，曾任蜀郡太守和渔阳太守。 永和四年(公元139年)，张衡请求告老还乡不准，又被调到朝中做尚书，但只任职一年就与世长辞了，终年六十一岁。
