美国著名特殊教育家柯克在1963年首次提出了LD概念。他所说的LD儿童(Learning Disabilities 简称LD)是指一些在学校有严重的学习困难,但无明显障碍的儿童。在柯克首次提出LD概念的基础上,1981年由美国联邦教育部全国缺陷儿童咨询委员会(NACHC)提出了“特殊学习能力障碍”这一名称,同时给这种特殊的LD儿童下了明确的定义:“所谓的特殊LD儿童,是智力正常,但表现为阅读、书写、计算等特殊能力方面存在障碍的儿童,而不包括运动障碍、感觉缺陷、原发性情绪障碍和文化剥夺或环境不良引起的学业失败”。目前,国内外研究者基本接受这种界定。
