During the EED of a meso or a prochiral compound,
the enzymatic reaction takes place faster at one of
the enantiotopic groups or faces of the substrate, thus
affording the two enantiomers of the product in unequal
amounts. This different rate of reaction arises
from the different energy of the diastereomeric transition
states between the enzyme and the substrate
along the reaction coordinate (¢¢Gq), and which can
be related to the enantioselectivity of the reaction by
means of eq 1, where E is the parameter that quantifies
the enantioselectivity displayed by the enzyme
in the EED. Despite the different names used for
this parameter, viz. “selectivity of the reaction” or
“prochiral selectivity”, we believe that there is no
contradiction in using the term “enantiomeric ratio”,
with the same sense it is used in the enzymatic KR
of racemic mixtures.
