个人认为选A

so as to do sth :为了做某事(with the intention of doing sth)

eg: I left a message so as to be sure of contacting her.
我留下张条子,确保能联络到她.

B,D应该都是不对的,因为that后应跟句子,而原文中后面的be late for his class 没有主语,不能构成完整句子,所以排除.

至于A选项.
in order to do sth :目的在于做某事(with the intention or perpose of doing sth)
eg: She arrived early in order to get a good seat.

光看词典上的解释,分不出它和as to do sth 有什么区别.

但是记得以前老师好象说过:
in order to 只能表示目的,其位置在句首或句中皆可,否定句结构用in order not to，比 so as to正式;
so as to既可表示目的，又可表示结果，其位置一般在句中，否定结构用so as not to.

如果我没有记错的话,那么我觉得根据位置来看,应该选A

正确的应是:C.so as not to

选择c, so as not to 是以防怎样的意思，就是说为了不会迟到
