Illegal tolls

Some 16 provinces and municipalities, including Liaoning and Hubei provinces, have built 158 illegal toll stations on 100 highways under their jurisdiction and had collected a total 14.9 billion yuan ($2.1 billion) in passage fees by the end of 2005, the National Audit Office said yesterday on its website.

100 get talent accolade

The 2007 annual award ceremony of Talents 100, which honors the contributions of people in various fields, was held in Peking University on Monday, with 100 people from home and abroad attending the event.

Those honored include academician Min Enze, honorary president of the Chinese Olympic Committee He Zhenliang, and renowned economist Wu Jinglian.

Of the 100 winners, 52 were from the economic field.
