The fluidized cooler is used to cool the bottom ash from furnace temperature down to a temperature acceptable for the bottom ash handling system. The cooler contains several chambers separated by underflow weirs, each separately fluidized in the bubbling bed regime. Bottom ash enters the cooler and flows from chamber to chamber to the ash drain in the floor of the last chamber. The first chamber is used as a stripper where the fine material is separated from the bottom ash stream and returned to the furnace. Subsequent chambers are used to cool the ash, and may contain water-cooled tube bundles cooled with either economizer water (for heat recovery) or service water.
This ash cooler design has proven highly reliable, even with the high bottom ash flows associated with high-ash fuels.
