Prepositions can be confusing to learners of language. It seems the usage is not always consistant, and can be used differently in different places.

Ex.

People in Northeastern U.S. say "standing ON line" when waiting, but people in Southwestern U.S. say "standing IN line"

"In" and "On" can sometimes be used interchangeably when the object of the preposition could be considered a surface ("on") OR an area ("in")

A face is a surface, but it's also a general area where someone could be slapped. Therefore you could use either "slapped on the face" or "slapped in the face"
